We are pleased to announce that Gengee has been featured in the latest WIPO Technology SPARK Report on Sports Technology, published by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) – a United Nations agency with 193 member states, dedicated to making intellectual property work for innovation and creativity.
As WIPO describes in the report: "This WIPO Technology SPARK report examines sports technology through the lens of IP analytics. By analyzing sports-related patents, trademarks and designs, the report reveals patterns of inventive activity, commercialization and design-led differentiation. The analysis reveals how advances in equipment, materials, data analytics, wearables and digital platforms are reshaping sport, while showing that sports-related innovation is expanding rapidly, reflecting the growing technological intensity of modern sport and its surrounding innovation ecosystem."
The report was released ahead of World IP Day 2026, which this year is themed around Sports and Intellectual Property – a fitting recognition of how innovation is reshaping the world of sport.
A Patent Spotlight on Gengee
In the section "Smart equipment and intelligent materials", the report highlights Gengee as one of the early pioneers in smart ball technology. Our published patent application WO 2016/206413 A1, titled "Smart ball and system thereof", is featured as a Patent Spotlight, acknowledging our early work in integrating inertial sensors and wireless communication to capture precise motion and positioning data.
As the report notes: "One of the early smart ball patents includes Gengee's published application for a smart ball that integrates inertial sensors and wireless communication to capture precise motion and positioning data, supporting data-driven athlete training and performance analysis."
The spotlight further details the problem we set out to solve – the difficulty of effectively using sensor data in high‑intensity sports – and our solution: a smart ball that combines a six‑axis inertial sensor, time‑stamping, wireless communication, and positioning base stations to deliver high‑precision, low‑power data collection. The result is a data foundation that helps athletes improve their special skills and training efficiency.

Looking Ahead
This recognition from WIPO validates our long‑standing commitment to innovation and IP protection in sports technology. We believe that sustainable leadership in sport comes from protecting the ideas that push performance forward.
As Weidan Chen, CEO of Gengee, puts it:
"In sports, victory is decided by milliseconds; in technology, breakthroughs are defined by patents. At Gengee, we protect our core innovations to transform every touch and every run on the field into a data-driven language that empowers the sports industry."Moving forward, we will continue to invest in R&D and patent strategy, turning every movement on the pitch into actionable data for athletes, coaches, and teams.
